KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF NURSES IN ADMINISTERING MEDICATIONS IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT OF KASR EL AININI HOSPITAL
Abstract
Aim: the current study explore the nurses' knowledge and practice regarding medication management at intensive care units at Kasr El Ainini hospital in Egypt. Design: A cross sectional study design was used. Setting: This study was conducted at intensive care units areas in predefined hospital. Subjects: 90 nurses involved in this study. Tools: structured interviewing questionnaire. It includes socio-demographic data, nurses' knowledge and practice regarding medication errors, reporting errors, medication preparation, medication safety administration and nurses' practice regarding medications. Findings: shows that 76.7% participant have satisfactory knowledge about medication errors; 65.0% of participant has Knowledge about medication preparation; 80% has unsatisfactory knowledge of drug safety; And the highest percentage of 98.3% of unsatisfactory knowledge staff practicing doctors in the critical area.
The current study concludes that most participants have satisfactory knowledge regarding Medications management regarding most of domains except practicing medication at intensive care area ; they got average main knowledge 4.5 out of 12 , so nurses need to increase their knowledge level regarding practicing medication at critical Area to improve patients' safety and promote the quality of care.
